Wapak Man Dies In Collision

June 16, 2014

WAPAKONETA — A Wapakoneta man died as a result of a collision involving a golf cart Monday morning.

According to a report from the Wapakoneta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, at approximately 10:10 a.m., Wilbur L. Hager, 81, of Wapakoneta, was driving a golf cart east on Monroe Road. He reportedly failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Monroe and Conant roads and pulled into the path of a 2014 Jeep Cherokee that was traveling south. The Jeep was being driven by Lu Ann Monroe, 60, of Wapakoneta.

Monroe swerved in an attempt to avoid hitting the golf cart but still hit the golf cart, causing it to overturn. Hager was thrown from the golf cart and he was trapped underneath it. Monroe drove off the left side of the road, then off the right side of the road and came to rest in a field. Monroe and her two passengers, Sarah M. Munson, 8, and Katie R. Munson, 5, both of Elida, were uninjured. Hager was pronounced dead at the scene by a member of the Auglaize County Coroner's Office.

Buckland Fire and Cridersville EMS assisted at the scene. The collision remains under investigation.
