Volleyball: O-G outlasts New Bremen in fifth game in DIII district semifinal

October 25, 2012

KALIDA — Ottawa-Glandorf earned a fifth set win to defeat New Bremen, 17-25, 27-25, 25-21, 20-25 and 15-11 in the Division III district semifinals held at Kalida High School on Wednesday.

The Titans (20-5) will go on and face the Coldwater Cavaliers (18-7) , who upset the Liberty-Benton Eagles in four games, 19-25, 25-16, 26-24 and 25-18. The Titans and Cavaliers will play Saturday in the district finals at 6 p.m. at Kalida High School.

The Cardinals finish their season at 13-12.

“We knew coming in that O-G was a very solid and good team,” New Bremen head coach Theresa Jenkins said. “We knew that we would have to bring our “A” game and I think we did. Then it slipped and we got it back. It was a fight and it came down to whoever made the least errors.”

“We knew New Bremen had an angle attack,” Titans head coach Ann Ellerbrock said. “We worked on that in practice this week and Kayla Eastman made two blocks in a row and the block at the end of the game took the wind out of their sails.”

O-G got the quick start when they scored six of the first eight points in the fifth set and Kaela Croy served four of the six points including two aces. The Cardinals got the serve back on a service error and matched points with the Titans to close the score to 10-6.

Following a New Bremen timeout, the Cardinals got the serve back on a kill from Stephanie Brandt and a serve from Tarynn Clune to make the score 10-8. After an exchange of points, Croy moved the Titans to match point with two serves. New Bremen regained the serve on a kill from Victoria Wente, but the Titans won the set and match on a service error for the 15-11 victory.

“In that fifth set we just got too far behind,” Jenkins said.
