LIMA —  St. Marys’ furious rally to extend its season came up just short in a fifth game.

Defiance won the fourth game and then staved off St. Marys in the deciding fifth to oust the Roughriders from the Division II sectional volleyball tournament on Tuesday at Lima Senior High School with a 21-25, 26-24, 18-25, 25-18, 17-15 win.

“We had so many chances to put them away and finish,” St. Marys head coach Tricia Rosenbeck said. “That’s kind of been the story of our season — focusing and finishing games. The girls fought. They fought the whole night, and I did feel like we played well. I just wish it would’ve ended differently.”

The regular season match was decided in Defiance’s favor in four sets in September. This one took a deciding fifth.

St. Marys finished the season 1-3 in five-game matches.

Defiance's Demma Strausbaugh matched the 17 kills she had  in Defiance’s win back in September at Memorial High School. Murray added 14 kills and Megan Sewell had eight kills.
