Virgil H. Stienecker, 89, of 1300 Circle Drive, St. Marys, died at 6:55 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011, at Otterbein Retirement Community in St. Marys.
He was born on Sept. 21, 1922, in rural St. Marys, the son of Leander and Lanora (Dohse) Stienecker, and they preceded him in death.
On Aug. 29, 1948, at the Zion Lutheran Church in St. Marys, he married Marjorie Schmehl, and she survives at Otterbein St. Marys Retirement Commnunity.
He is also survived by two daughters, Kate (Ned) Lawler of St. Marys and Noreen Stienecker of St. Marys; a grandson, Jason Stienecker; two great-grandsons, Jason Stienecker II and Nathaniel Stienecker; a great-granddaughter, Lana Stienecker.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Wilda Stienecker and Betty Murr; a son, Ron Stienecker, who died on July 12.
Virgil was a 1940 graduate of St. Marys Memorial High School.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served his country during World War II, including fighting in the Battle of the Bulge.
He retired after 35 years of service from Mersman Furniture Company in Celina. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He was noted for his knowledge of the best places to fish during the different seasons of the year. He was also an active Boy Scout leader in St. Marys, and he was a life member of both American Legion Post 323 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9289 in St. Marys.
He will be missed by the family that he loved. He was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he had served on the church council.
Funeral rites will be held at noon Thursday at the Miller-Long and Folk Funeral Home, 314 W. High St., St. Marys, the Rev. Bill Maki officiating.
Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services on Thursday at the funeral home, where memorial donations may be directed to either Zion Lutheran Church or to Otterbein St. Marys Retirement Community.
