By ANGELA WEAVER Staff Writer ST. MARYS — The Auglaize County Council on Aging recently received a grant from the National Council on Aging to be provided with six computers for a new computer lab.
ACCA Executive Director Christina Roby received a call Thursday notifying her of their application’s acceptance. “I’m thrilled about being recognized at a national level,” Roby said. “We’re truly grateful. There weren’t that many that they gave out.” Roby said the ACCA was commended for the level of their trained personnel, as well as the number of seniors they serve and for their commitment and desire to help out the community. The six new computers are expected to be received, with kiosks, later this month or in early October, Roby said. The new computers will be used, in addition to the computer the ACCA received through an Ohio Benefit Bank Technology Grant earlier this year. Those, coupled with the two computers the ACCA already had, bring the total number of computers at the facility to nine. “We’ll be offering all kinds of classes, on a variety of topics” Roby said. “We just didn’t have a place before.” Roby said the classes could range from beginning computer classes to classes helping people with their income tax forms. She said the classes most likely wouldn’t begin until January 2009. The ACCA, 610 Indiana Ave., will be holding an Open House from 9 a.m. to 1p.m. Sept. 13. There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony and for an opportunity for the public to tour the renovated senior center. The event coincides with National Senior Center Month. State Reps. John Adams and Cliff Hite will speak, as well as the Auglaize County Commissioners, Roby said. She said refreshments will be served and there will be 47 county booths and transportation is provided to those who need it. |
