By KATIE YANTIS Staff Writer ST. MARYS — Leaves are starting to fall, pools will start to close, and the cool fall breeze will begin to fill the air.
With school back in session, play time at the pool subsides and weekend fun changes gears from the pool and beach to campsites and festivals. Summer fun may be over, but there are many things to enjoy about the fall season that approaches. Local high schools begin to prepare for homecoming, football excitement fills the air on Friday nights, after the cuts, corn mazes will start to open, pumpkin patches will be filled with kids picking out the seasons pumpkins, various festivals will fill the streets and of course Halloween gets closer and closer as the fall season progresses. There are those who have begun their fall activities already with much excitement. Tom and Josephine Johnston traveled to the area from Wisconsin for their favorite fall activities. “We are here for the Eldora World 100, that’s a good signal of fall,” Johnston said. “We come to the campgrounds (Grand Lake St. Marys) to camp before the race, the leaves are changing already it’s nice.” The Johnstons have been camping since Tuesday and said The World 100 at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg is their favorite fall activity. The race begins today and lasts through the weekend. Being involved in the community, and being around kids for fall programs is a favorite for New Bremen resident Lauren Niekamp. “One of my favorite holidays is Halloween, passing out candy during Halloween is my favorite,” Niekamp said. “I work at TLC also and we just started our fall program there.” Niekamp said that she also is excited about the Pumpkinfest in New Bremen scheduled for Sept. 27. For Tom Blanke of St. Marys, the foliage is enough for him to enjoy the change of season. “The first part of October when the leaves are changing and they have the Halloween party for the kids at the campground would be my favorite,” Blanke said. “I also start fishing again in the middle of September I don’t fish during the summer, but then I fish through the spring.” The Halloween party at the campground will be held Oct. 3-5 and all of the reserved areas are already booked. However there are first come, first serve sites that are still available. The party will hold many activities from a cornhole tournament to a scavenger hunt. Festivals are another favorite for St. Marys Memorial High School student and native of California Stephanie Contreras. “Going to the festivals,” Contreras said, when asked what her favorite fall activities are. “Back at home we had certain festivals in the park around this time, and would have dodgers players come and other famous people.” Other favorites included, camping, staying busy with school, going to the park, and catching cicadas.
