By MIKE BURKHOLDER Managing Editor ST. MARYS — Area residents wanting to get a peek into the history surrounding St. Marys can now do while playing cards.
The St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce recently released a historic deck of playing cards. The deck features photographs of historic sites and businesses from the city’s 185 year history. “I saw a deck of playing cards in another community three years ago,” Chamber Executive Director Kelly Kill said. “I thought it was a cool idea so I brought it before my board and they also liked the idea.” After contacting the manufacture to get specifications, Kill said she solicited photographs from local historian George Neargarder and area businesses. The deck contains 55 cards, including three jokers. “They all have something on them,” Kill said, noting a photograph of Memorial Park appears on the back of all the cards. “Some of the cards have the old High Street Mill, the Foundry and the Flood of 1913. There also is a picture of the elephant crossing the wire on Spring Street.” The decks, available for $10 at the chamber office, will be on sale during the historic walk of St. Marys Sept. 14. Kill said the decks also are an opportunity to reach a wider audience and share the city’s history. “It’s a way to share with our young people the history of St. Marys,” Kill said. “Not everyone has the opportunity to have a picture of the when the library was in Memorial Park or have a picture of where their grandfather worked.” Kill said officials printed only one run of the cards, so when they run out there will be no more available. Kill said the reason was to make the decks a collector’s item and more meaningful. |
