By MARY BARGDILL Staff Writer ST. MARYS — The chatter and laughter of students once again fills the hallways of most area schools as children begin their first week of classes.
Memorial High School was no exception as students and faculty expressed excitement at returning to school after their summer break. “We’ve had a great start — a very smooth start,” Principal Mike Makley said. “We had very few issues and got right down to business.” Makley said the four new teachers and athletic director were hard at work as well as the rest of the faculty and staff. “We’re setting a tone for the school year and I think we’re off to a good start,” he said. “I think they’re glad to be back. They miss their friends, and the routine and organization in their life. They miss the athletic activities. Many of the juniors and seniors are excited about vocation classes.” Sophomore Dillon Slaven said he was happy to return to school. “Yes, seeing all my new teachers (and) seeing how my new school year is going to work out for me,” he said. “My favorite is art class because it’s always fun and exciting.” Senior and Student Council President Kara Cheslock said that after a busy summer of touring college campuses and attending Buckeye Girls State, she was looking forward to returning to school. “I’m glad to finish up so I can go to college,” Cheslock said. “I want to be a doctor. I like government, physics and statistics isn’t bad either.” Freshman Jasmine Medley said the best part of returning to school was, “(seeing) friends and getting out of the house.” She was also thinking about joining the band. Teachers were also relieved to be back in their classrooms. “I’m pretty excited to be back at school around the kids again,” math teacher Bruce Renner said. “I miss all the faces from the summertime.” |
