Riders win Chicken Bowl, 28-7 Print E-mail

Paul Lauth beat the right tackle, locked onto his target — the quarterback— from the blindside and stalked him.

After swallowing up the Urbana quarterback for the sack, the lanky St. Marys defensive end looked up in the air, flexed and screamed at no one in particular.

On a night that a full moon shined over Skip Baughman Stadium, Lauth and the rest of his teammates seemed ready to move onto bigger and better prey.

The St. Marys football team won the three-quarter Chicken Bowl scrimmage against Urbana, 28-7, in front of a large, well-fed crowd in the Riders’ final tune-up before the regular season begins next Friday.

“We did a lot of things well tonight,” St. Marys coach Doug Frye said. “We saw a lot of positive things. We also saw tons of things that we have to fix for us to be a good football team.”

After the two teams exchanged touchdowns in the first quarter — St. Marys’ score came on a one-yard sneak by quarterback Jake Taylor — St. Marys went on a scoring barrage.

Dylan Dietz plowed three yards to paydirt on the hip of the left guard on the first play of the second quarter to make it 14-7 in favor of the Roughriders.

Just a few minutes later, Taylor picked off a pass and scampered 43 yards for a score. Even though the PAT failed, the Riders led 20-7 with 9:09 left in the second quarter.

After the Roughrider defense stopped Urbana quickly, a long pass from Taylor to Derek Freewalt set up an

Aaron Homan five-yard touchdown off the right tackle. A Dietz two-point run made the score 28-7.
Both teams played a very conservative third quarter, with both teams eating up clock with grinding running games.

The most important statistic was the number zero, however — as in the number of injured players.
“We came out of this game healthy,” Frye said.

Now the Riders can focus their attention on the Piqua Indians, who will come to Skip Baughman Stadium on Aug. 22.

Piqua beat the Riders 37-20 in two-part fashion last season after lightning postponed the game at halftime.
