By MIKE BURKHOLDER Managing Editor ST. MARYS — Members of the St. Marys City Council today are expected to voice their opposition to the possible closure of a local license bureau.
Councilors are expected to vote on a resolution opposing the closing of the Deputy Registrar Office in the city. Officials with the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles in July told The Evening Leader the St. Marys location was on a list of offices that could be closed next year. “Much of the population of Auglaize County is located in the western half of the county,” the resolution notes. “This office serves not only St. Marys, but other Auglaize County communities such as New Knoxville, New Bremen and Minster.” Language in the resolution also urges residents to do their part to keep the office from closing. A vote on a possible citywide leash law also could happen during the meeting. The issue dominated a series of safety committee meetings and could be brought to the floor by members of council for a vote. In addition to the leash law, councilors are expected to vote on an ordinance pertaining to dog litter as well as one creating an administrative board of appeals. Members of the board would be charged with hearing appeals on decision made by city officials. Another piece of legislation up for its first reading would amend an ordinance regarding dangerous buildings. The changes regard the proposed creation of the administrative board of appeal. The meeting of the St. Marys City Council is scheduled for 7 p.m. today in the city building located along East Spring Street. The meeting is open to the public. |
