By KATIE YANTIS Staff Writer ST. MARYS — SummerFest is off to a start and with big fun, comes big announcements — the St. Marys Memorial High School Alumni Foundation has announced the 2008 Hall of Fame Class.
The Hall of Fame Alumni Foundation has two goals — to establish an endowment for St. Marys City Schools and to establish, maintain and administer a Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame recognizes three different categories; academic and professional achievement; athletic achievement, and distinguished service to St. Marys City Schools. The 2008 Hall of Fame Class inductee for Academic and Professional Achievement is Floyd Keith. Keith was a prominent athlete at Memorial High School who played football. Keith also moved on to play football at Ohio Northern University. Keith later moved on to be the head football coach at the University of Rhode Island, where he also coached the Rams to a 22 ranking in 1995. Now Keith is the Executive Director of the Black Coaches Association. The 2008 inductee for Athletic achievement is Chuck Huwer. Huwer is a businessman who used to own Alberts Sporting Goods. He is recognized for his achievement in football at The Ohio State University and his achievement in minor league baseball. Huwer received 11 varsity letters while attending Memorial High School and was the MVP in the first North/ South All Ohio football game. Huwer went on to receive a scholarship to play football at Ohio State, but left after one season to play professional baseball. Huwer played for the Cleveland Indians farm system in Green Bay, Wis., and Harrisburg, Pa. For distinguished service to St. Marys City Schools, the 2008 inductee is Ronda Shelby. Shelby has nearly 40 years of service to St. Marys schools, including teaching language arts in the junior high and starting the softball and tennis programs. Shelby, coached the St. Marys swim team, Little League baseball and started the Shelby Diving Award, the Shelby David Swimming Award. She also was on the St. Marys Community Foundation Scholarship Committee. Shelby’s involvement list goes way beyond that, ranging from being assistant coach for CYO fast pitch softball to starting an annual writing award to eighth grade students. Members of the 2007 class — Galen Cisco, Edward Noble, and in honor of Eugene “Skip” Baughman, his daughters — will all be riding in the SummerFest parade at 4:30 p.m. today. “We felt our 2007 class was great and we wanted to follow up with something just as strong , which we did and I believe we will be able to continue doing,” Alumni Association member Bill Kellermeyer said. Keith, Huwer and Shelby will all be formally inducted to the Hall of Fame Sept. 19 prior to the Wapakoneta versus St. Marys football game. The inductees will each receive a plaque commemorating their induction. An induction banquet also will take place Sept. 20 at the Lost in the 50s Diner. The time will be announced at a later date. With the 2008 class announced, the foundation has already started accepting nominations for the 2009 class. The nomination form can be downloaded from the Web site at, www.mhsaf.com. “We encourage people to send us nominations, we want people to feel free to nominate people, people can be nominated for multiple areas,” Kellermeyer said. The only qualification for the nominations is that any nominee for the academic and professional achievement must be a graduate of Memorial High School. |
