By MARY BARGDILL Staff Writer ST. MARYS — The crowd that gathered in Memorial Park Thursday evening had a chance to relax to the classic sounds of Big Band music from the 50s and 60s.
A/C Swing, a band comprised of musicians from the surrounding area, performed for Supper and Sounds in the Park following the Opening Ceremony of the 2008 SummerFest. The act was part of the Summer Concert in the Park Series sponsored by the St. Marys Rotary. “It’s a nice crowd tonight,” Rotary District Governor Elect for District 6600 Jim Heinrich said. “People not only come out to enjoy the music, but they come out to enjoy the people — a little bit of small town hospitality.” The band played such classics as “Sing, Sing, Sing a Song,” “All of Me,” and “Pennsylvania 6-5000.” “This will be the second time I’ve listened to them, but I love them, they’re really good,” St. Marys resident Beverly Schwartz said. “I like the variety.” A/C Swing formed in 1995 and has appeared at St. Marys SummerFest for several years. The band is under the direction of Scott Kuenning. Before the busy weekend festivities, Thursday evening’s performance was an opportunity for many residents — including senior citizens — to enjoy the music they listened to in their younger years. St. Marys residents LeRoy and Mary Lou Nagel remember the tunes fondly from the years they courted and were first married. “We come every year to hear them,” LeRoy Nagel said.
