ST. MARYS — Little girls clad in their Sunday best took the stage at Memorial High School in the Performing Arts Center to compete in the 2008 Little Miss SummerFest Pageant Wednesday night.

Fifteen girls, ages 5 to 7, started the program, sponsored by the St. Marys Optimist Club and St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce, with a routine to “Baby’s Got Her Blue Jeans On” in pink pageant T-shirts and blue jean shorts, of course. They then introduced themselves, where the girls were judged by Jamie Schneider, Amy Eisert and Ellen Bryant on their poise and ability to speak clearly.
After their introductions, Amanda Sampson, a 2005 Memorial High School graduate, and her sister Elizabeth, a sophomore at Memorial, sang “Tell Me Bout The Good Old Days” before Kristina’s Dance Escape’s mini competition team performed to “Momma I’m A Big Girl Now” and Kate Fox, from Arts Place, performed a part from Godspell Jr.
Then, the 15 girls changed into their dresses and were interviewed by host Mary Schumm, being judged on their poise, smile and appearance.
Aaleyiah Williams, 6, daughter of Jay and Kris Williams, told Schumm she entered the Little Miss SummerFest Pageant because her sister was in it.
“I wanted to look pretty like her,” Aaleyiah said.
Zoe-e Joseph, 6, daughter of Josh and Molly Joseph, told Schumm she entered the pageant because she thought it would be a good time to meet new girls and would be fun learning a new dance.
“I would clean my room,” Zoe-e said when Shumm asked her about one thing she would do to help around the house. “Because I’d be the one who already messed it up,” she said.
Brieanna Shindler, 6, daughter of Rodney Shindler and Jenny Ball said she would do the dishes.
“Because you get wet!” Brieanna said. Brieanna said her favorite song was one by Billy Ray Cyrus because “he sings about how he doesn’t want his little girl to grow up.”
After the interviews, the three judges tabulated their scores while Kristina’s Dance Escape’s junior competition team danced to “Fuego,” Kidz Drama Klub and Grand Lake Theatrix performed to “I Want You Back,” Emily Saintignon sang a Disney medley and Kristina’s Dance Escape’s senior competition team danced to “El Empacto.”
When the girls took the stage again, the 2007 Little Miss Queen Deawanna Adams and 2008 SummerFest Queen Abbie Spencer joined them for the crowning.
Presley Smith, 7, daughter of Mark and Tami Smith, was Second Runner Up, Samantha Ackroyd, 6, daughter of Pete and Allison Ackroyd, was First Runner Up and Zoe-e was crowned queen.
All contestants took home a gift bag with wrist bands, ride tickets, McDonald’s coupons, Dairy Queen Coupons, Pizza Hut coupons, Taco Bell coupons, toys and candy.
