From Staff Reports Michael Schmitmeyer, a former St. Marys Memorial High School golfer and a University of Findlay golf team member, finished 44th at The Optimist International Junior Golf Championships in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., this weekend.
Schmitmeyer shot rounds of 78 and 79 over the weekend for his final score of 306 (18-over par) on the PGA National Championship and Arnold Palmer courses. Schmitmeyer had a birdie on the ninth hole in his Sunday round. On Saturday, Schmitmeyer birdied the par-5 third hole on his way to a 78. Emillano Grillo of Argentina won the event, which was open to junior amateur golfers between the ages of 16 and 18. Grillo shot 16-under par for the tournament. Stewart Hagestand of California was second with an 11-under score. This is the second straight year tha Schmitmeyer has competed in the event. The PGA National Championship course played 6800 yards for the players, while the Palmer course was 6768 yards. Both were Par 72 layouts. The top fifty players made the cut and played the entire weekend. Those below the cut line played on Thursday and Friday only. Schmitmeyer will be a freshman at Findlay this fall. |
