By MIKE BURKHOLDER Managing Editor ST. MARYS — Members of a city committee Monday night agreed to meet to discuss possible legislation regarding a comprehensive leash law.
The St. Marys Safety Committee is scheduled to meet at 5:15 p.m. Aug. 4 to discuss the topic. Safety-Service Director Tom Hitchcock said he plans to bring sample ordinances for safety committee members to discuss. “They will (say) either no leash law or a leash law,” Hitchcock told The Evening Leader following the meeting. “I think we will present them with both and let them decide which one to send to council.” Hitchcock said City Law Director Kraig Noble provided him with several options after examining similar ordinance from other municipalities. Once presented to safety committee members, they will decide which ordinance, if any, to recommend to city councilors for further action. Councilors can decided to adopt a citywide leash law — an option pushed by 4th Ward Councilor Robin Willoughby — or leave the current ordinance unchanged. Under a current city ordinance, a dog is required to be on a leash if it is in a city park or if it is a female and is in heat. Hitchcock requested councilors approve an ordinance allowing him to sell equipment from the former city power plant to Hoge Lumber in New Knoxville. Hitchcock said officials from the New Knoxville firm have a power plant on site for which the equipment will help operate. “We passed an ordinance that allowed us to sell to other municipal plants,” Hitchcock said. “Hoge Lumber wants to purchase some of our parts.” Hitchcock said the total of the sale would be approximately $2,200. In other business, councilors: • Approved the third and final reading of a resolution regarding the 2009 budget. • Approve an ordinance authoring the editing and inclusion of certain ordinances as parts of the various component codes of the codified ordinances of the city of St. Marys. • Approved an ordinance authorizing Hitchcock to purchase a skid steer loader to provide trenching services for the electric department. • Approved an ordinance vacating a 16.5 foot alley in the South Addition of the city. • Approved an emergency ordinance to appropriate money for deficiencies in the original budget. The next meeting of the St. Marys City Council is scheduled for 7 p.m. Aug. 11 in the city building located along East Spring Street. The meeting is open to the public. |
