Mariners swept in doubleheader |

By RANDY WILKER Staff Writer CELINA — The offense was hot and heavy Wednesday night for the Southern Ohio Copperheads as they swept a doubleheader from the Grand Lake Mariners. In the first game, Southern Ohio rode a five-run second inning to a 9-3 victory and the Copperheads scored 11 runs in the first inning of game two to grab an 11-0 victory.
The Copperheads batted around in the second inning of game number one scoring five runs in the process. With two outs and a runner on first due to a walk, Taylor Hoisington reached on a single and both runners scored on a triple to right by Kevin Hess. Hess came home on a single by Zach Keen and Jeremie Rehak reached on an error. Both runners came home on a single to left by Chad Geier. Grand Lake got on the board with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out, Brian Suerdick singled to right and after a strikeout, scored when Kory Benbow reached on an error. Southern Ohio answered with three runs in the fifth inning. Jared Humphries led off with a walk and Kyle Mossbarger reached on a single. After a line out, both runners scored on a double to center by Hess. Grand Lake changed pitchers bringing on Jake Wilbernacke and he got Keen to ground out to first and Hess came home when Rehak reached on an error. The Mariners (11-21) concluded their scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ryan Frazee reached on a single to left and Joe Mack and Suerdick drew walks to load the bases. The Copperheads (14-15) brought Joe Stilphon on to pitch and he gave up a sacrifice fly to Benbow and Brett Burch singled home Mack to make the score 8-3. Southern Ohio added a run in the seventh for the 9-3 victory. Southern Ohio continued their momentum into the second game as they nearly batted around twice in scoring 11 runs on 10 hits and one error. Mike Vaughn was the hitter in game two as he had a two-run double and a three-run triple in the first inning and also scored himself both times. The Mariners travel to Anderson tonight for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. Next Thursday, July 31, the Mariners entertain Anderson for a single game beginning at 7:15 p.m. It is also Farm Night at Jim Hoess Field. Former Reds star David Collins will be at the park for autographs and will throw out the first pitch. Festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. |
