ST. MARYS — Students from a local high school volunteered their time to help the St. Marys Beautification Committee of the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce make the community a little brighter.

Approximately a half a dozen National Honor Society members of Memorial High School gathered in the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Service Building in Grand Lake St. Marys Park Saturday morning to paint 15 wooden signs that will line the Miami and Erie Canal towpath from Fort Loramie to Delphos. For senior Megan Bruggeman, it was the first time she volunteered to help the St. Marys Beautification Committee.
“I thought it would be kind of fun to help out with my friends,” Bruggeman said.
St. Marys Beautification Committee member Robbie Burke said the project was an opportunity to give something back for the community.
“I think just being involved with the community and making things a little better in St. Marys — that’s part of the project,” Burke said. “It’s a great community project.”
Earlier in the week, older wooden signs in the most need of repair were removed from the towpath by employees of ODNR Division of Water. New signs also were painted Saturday morning. The completed signs will be installed a later date, ODNR Canal Operations Manager Steve Dorsten said.
“We’ve got a pretty good group today,” Dorsten said. “Our goal was to get these painted and it looks like we accomplished that.”
Once the painting project was complete, the volunteers cleaned debris along the stone walk path of the Miami and Erie Canal in St. Marys from north of High Street to U.S. 33.
“A lot of storm branches,” Dorsten said. “It wasn’t real big stuff, but it was a lot.”
