By Allison Roorda Sports Correspondent Minster bounced back from their loss earlier this week to pull out a victory over St. Marys, 8-2.
The first inning passed by without event as Minster held St. Marys to one run, while the Minster hitters went up and down in order in the bottom of the first. It was the bottom of the second that decided Minster’s lead. Austin Baumer started out on a walk to first then advanced to third. He stole home on a wild pitch, while Sam Otting hit an RBI then came home himself on Jack Griner’s single. The inning ended with a three-run lead for Minster. Time Brown added another to Minster’s score in the third. “We got the lead early, and Eric Trushaw threw strikes,” Minster head coach Mark Wiss said. “They had a nice pitcher, too. The Kill kid threw hard and had us looking kind of foolish for the first couple innings. Once we got a lead, we played pretty good defense again tonight.” St. Marys answered in the top of the fourth with two runs of their own, but they would be the only runs scored by St. Marys for the rest of the game. “They hit the ball a lot better,” explained St. Marys head coach. “We had a couple plays that hurt us on base running. Their pitcher threw well, and they hit the ball.” Minster added four more runs in the fifth, two of which came when Brian Phlipot hit a high fly ball to right field to bring home two Minster runners. For the next two innings, both teams were restricted to less than two hits each, with no runs resulting. “Eric Trushaw has been our workhorse all year,” Wiss said of his pitcher for the night, “and it was his night to go, and he did well again.” Minster, now 9-5 overall, will play Wapak on Friday night at Mescher field. |
