By KAY LOUTH Staff Writer ST. MARYS — St. Marys School District officials say they are honing in on a possible replacement for the outgoing superintendent.
When Superintendent Ken Baker from the St. Marys City School District announced his intention to retire and take a position elsewhere, school board members began the process to find a new superintendent. By Friday, 20 resumes for the position filtered in. On Monday night, board members, along with Treasurer Tom Sommer, met to review the applications. By the end of the meeting, the group narrowed the 20 down to five choices, four men and one woman. “All five board members pretty much named these individuals,” Sommer said of the review process. “We did make some appointments for this Friday.” Sommer said board members will met in executive session Friday for the first round of interviews. “The plan is right now, we are going to interview these five people this Friday,” Sommer said. “The board is hopefully going to narrow that down to two or three candidates and (then) have a second round of interviews later in the month.” Sommer said after board members further narrow down the list of the candidates, he believes it is board member’s intention to ask some community members and other school staff sit in on the interviews. Sommer said the sessions would be to gain the feedback of the community. Sommer said he thinks board members will make a choice after the second round of interviews.
“They want to have somebody early in July,” he said. In May, Baker accepted the position of Associate Executive Director of the State Principals Association, which is an organization that provides a variety of services to the state’s more than 2,500 principals. Baker was a principal for 21 years before accepting the superintendent’s position in St. Marys. Baker said his start date with the principals organization is flexible and he will be around during the hiring process. “My job once that new person is on board is to sit down and work out a transition plan for the job,” Baker said. |
