Cars return to Bremenfest |

NEW BREMEN — This year’s Bremenfest will give car enthusiasts a chance to get their motors running.
The festival is bringing back a car show for the first time in more than a decade. Car owners will be able to show off their vehicles on Bremenfest grounds from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday during the festival.
“We used to have one but it was held at Jim Bubeck’s Chevrolet,” Bremenfest Committee President Kevin Bergman said. “Since we have a little more room we are going to have it on the grounds of Bremenfest.”
Winners of the show will be determined through the votes of spectators. The top 10 finishers will be awarded dash plaques and will be invited to show off their rides in the Bremenfest parade at 1 p.m. Sunday.
The car show was a popular draw when it was active.
“They typically got 100 to 150 cars,” Bergman said. “We want to get out of the gate with 75 this year. The fliers will go out next week or so, we just turned them into the printer.”
The parade will feature local high school marching bands, local fire departments and floats from other local festivals. The New Bremen Pumpkin Growers also will have a float.
Another addition to this year’s festival is Mike Albert, an Elvis tribute artist from Columbus. Albert is nationally renowned and was featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show. He will perform three sets with a seven-piece band Sunday night from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Other popular events return such as the kids fishing derby, the cheerleading contest at New Bremen High School, mud volleyball and the chili cook-off. The woodcarving auction is scheduled, as is the big wheel races and the beanbag tournament.
Entertainment will be Staples, a local band who will perform Friday night. Redball Jets will play Saturday night with Albert playing Sunday. All three will play at the Crown Pavilion.
Money raised from the festival goes back to help sponsor various community activities throughout the year.
“We fund a lot of different things,” Bergman said. “In the past, money was given for computer labs at the schools. The Little League came to us and we’ll pay for uniforms. The goals is to raise money so we can give back to the kids and they can benefit somehow.”
Bergman said he hopes the festival can set aside money for a new sports complex that is proposed for the high school. In previous years, money has been donated to the police and fire departments, as well as the YMCA.
“All that money goes completely back to the community in one sense or another,” Bergman said. “Nothing is held back, just enough to start the festival next year.”
This year marks the 34th Bremenfest. The first was held in 1974. This year’s festival is scheduled for Aug. 15-17.
