Holy Rosary By KAY LOUTH Staff Writer ST. MARYS — For more than 30 years, the Holy Rosary Catholic Church has hosted a garage sale and this year it's no different.
The church opened its doors Thursday morning to eager shoppers waiting to see what kind of bargains they could find or one of kind items to add to their collections. “It's doing really well," long time garage sale volunteer Sue Halko said. "We get a lot of items and we try to keep them (priced) low.” Friday was Bag Day, when customers could fill up a shopping bag with clothing or books for $3. Today everything goes on sale for half price, Halko said. However the doors close at noon. When the sale ends, volunteers will be begin packing up left over items. They will be donated to help other charitable organizations. Halko said the clothing goes to St. Vincent DePaul's in Dayton and the leftover housewares will go to help a group who takes items to help those who live in the Appalachian region of the country. Halko said on opening day the donated items were stacked high. However by Friday afternoon, the shelves and tables were starting to become visibly thinner. “When we start boxing up, sometimes you would think we hadn't sold anything,” Halko said. Halko said furniture was a popular item when they have it and it usually gets snapped up by college students. The thousands of items in the garage sale are mostly donated by church members, however people throughout the community also lent a helping hand. Halko said the garage sale is part of the Holy Rosary Festival and is a fundraiser for the church. The festival runs June 13 to 15. |
