By KAY LOUTH Staff Writer ST. MARYS — From vacations in exotic locales to antique china tea sets, bidders in the first-ever benefit auction for Arts Place-The Collective Center, will likely find something to appeal to their taste and pocketbook Friday.
Director Heidi Steinke Meade said the auction will wrap up the 2008-09 fundraising campaign for the center. The event could help add to the center’s coffers in the coming year. “We’re hoping this fundraiser will bring in the last bit of money to keep this place open and running,” Steinke Meade said. “We hope to bring in $10,000, which is what we have left to raise in this campaign.” The idea for the benefit auction is modeled on the more than 20-year-old tradition at the Portland, Ind., arts center, the umbrella organization for the St. Marys facility. “There’s lots of donated items,” Steinke Meade said. “(There are) lots of antiques and several pieces from local artists including blown glass, ceramics and water colors, just to name a few.” Some of the items up for grabs include three timeshares to Mexico and Utah and a weekend rental of a cottage on Grand Lake St. Marys. Larry Schaaf of Schaaf Auto Sales is donating auctioneer services for the event. The auction runs from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday at the center on 138 E. Spring St. In addition to the auction, Steinke Meade said there will be “plenty of good food and wine and a silent auction.” The silent auction features antiques and jewelry. When Steinke Meade first started the arts organization three years ago she said she knew raising money to fund the center was part of the job. However she admitted she didn’t have a clue where to start. Fortunately, Portland Arts Place, which has existed for 40 years, had all those mechanisms down pat and were able to advise Steinke Meade on how to successfully implement a fundraising campaign. The St. Marys center existed as an independent center for six months and then joined with Portland as the first satellite center. “This auction marks the third anniversary of the opening of the center,” Steinke Meade said. The auction is by invitation only and can be obtained by calling 419-419-394-0707 or by e-mailing
