By MARY BARGDILL Staff Writer ST. MARYS — Area mothers visiting a local campground had an opportunity to enjoy Mother’s Day outdoors and a day early.
Grand Lake St. Marys State Park sponsored its annual Spring Fling, a weekend of activities for mothers and their families. One of the biggest events of the weekend was a children’s fishing derby, held Saturday morning. Children fished with their parents, competing for the largest, smallest or most fish caught. Park Manager Craig Morton said the parents often enjoyed the fishing derby as much as the children. “They like seeing their kids catch fish,” Morton said. They like to see their kids enjoy themselves and have a good time.” Sidney resident Cassie Latimer was celebrating Mother’s Day not only with her husband Jason and two children, Ryan, 12, and Zane, 5, but also with her sister’s family and her mother, Joyce Dresback. “We brought Mom up camping for Mother’s Day,” Latimer said. “We’re going to cram everything in today. It’s really nice they do things like this for the kids.” Kim Schultz of Versailles was visiting the campgrounds with several family members, including her son Owen Schultz, 5. “Our family does a spring camp out every year, so the whole family is here,” Schultz said. “Saturday we do a community meal, everybody brings a side dish.” On Friday and Saturday evening, campers were treated to movies and popcorn in the small amphitheater. Park officers handed out flowers to moms on Saturday. On Sunday morning donuts and coffee were available, and a worship service was offered by the Rev. Bill Drummond of the St. Marys Church of the Nazarene. “The rest of the weekend, hopefully moms will be able to rest and have a good time,” Morton said.
