Outing helps honor Koenig Print E-mail

CELINA — A golf tournament and banquet in memory of a Wapakoneta teen continues to grow each year, his brother, Eric Koenig, said at the banquet Saturday. In the past, the event drew approximately 500 guests and raised nearly $2,000 after expenses.
“People come from out of town, and we make a lot of contacts from people we knew in the past,” Koenig said.
Doug Koenig was a Wapakoneta High school baseball player and 4-H member when he was killed in a train accident in 1994. Funds raised from the memorial have been donated for scholarships for Wapakoneta High School 4-H students and have been used to reimburse school board members for the purchase of a scoreboard for the baseball diamond.
Benefitting the activities his brother was involved in is just one benefit of the annual fundraiser, Koenig said.
“It’s helping to keep his memory alive,” Koenig said.
Wapakoneta resident Liesel Tatlinger, who has attended the event for the last three years, said her son, Seth Everitt, would have graduated from Wapakoneta High School two years after Doug Koenig, said she comes primarily for two reasons.
“I come to support the schools,” Tatlinger said. “Plus, it’s nice to see all the kids.”
This year, members of the fundraising committee held the golf tournament at Northmoor golf course in Celina to accommodate the growing number of players.  Fourty-four foursomes signed up for the golf tournament, Koenig said.
The banquet included chicken dinners for $6 each and a live band “Staples.”
A cornhole tournament is one of the most popular aspects of the annual event, Koenig said.  Sixty-four teams signed up for the cornhole tournament at a cost of $10 per person.  Half of the money earned was awarded to the winners and half benefitted the organization’s causes.
This year,  local sponsors advertised on the cornhole boards donated by the high school FFA.
“We’re getting a lot more support out of the town,” Koenig said.  “A lot of companies are giving us a lot of support.”
