By B.J. BETHEL Assistant Managing Editor NEW BREMEN — The New Bremen Historic Association is sponsoring its annual picnic scheduled for June 1. The event coincides with the village's celebration of its 175th anniversary.
Attendees can order chicken dinners for the event. The dinner comes with chicken, cole slaw, a roll with butter, potato and a choice of water, lemonade or coffee to drink. Homemade dumplings and ice cream will be available. The dinner costs $7 and should be pre-ordered to insure it's available. A drum corps from Dayton will be providing music. Awards will also be handed out for the coloring contest. All entries into the contest will be shown during the picnic and posted inside the museum. The association's barn will be open with items on display, including an antique washing machine and different products from the past. An old-style fire extinguisher, which is 4 feet tall and used sodium phosphate, will also be there. The event is a technically a fundraiser, but aimed more at getting people interested in the history of New Bremen. "We don't make much money off of it," New Bremen Historical Society member Delores Stienecker said. "We just want people to become acquainted with our museum." The event kicks off the opening of the museum on Sundays throughout the summer. Through June, July and August, the museum will be open between 2 to 4 p.m. "We're open every Tuesday morning, but not everyone can come because of work schedules," Stienecker said. "Sundays fit families because mom or dad aren't working and they can come with children and bring grandma along. Sometimes we get 14 to 15 people, some times not any." The unveiling of the village's 175th anniversary coin will also be held at the picnic. The coin features the seal of New Bremen on the front with an acknowledgment of the anniversary on the back. "It will be first available at the picnic," Stienecker said. "From then on it will be available and various members will have access to it. There will also be some available at the Artist's Touch." |
