By RANDY WILKER EL Sports Correspondent NEW BREMEN – You can never say die in the game of softball. Monday evening the New Bremen Lady Cardinal softball team trailed 2-0 in the sixth inning, but the Cardinals scored a run in the sixth and tallied two more in the seventh to register a 3-2 victory over the Fort Recovery Indians in MAC game played at New Bremen.
“We didn’t quit and that was the big thing,” Cardinals head coach Craig Griesdorn said. “We have had a hard time bunching hits together. Stacy (Timmerman) got a walk in the sixth inning and Michelle (Griesdorn) got the big triple. We had the opportunity with only one out. They changed pitchers and get a strikeout and line out to get out of the inning.” In the bottom of the fifth inning the Cardinals (9-9, 3-3) started their comeback. Timmerman got a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a ground out by Tracy Jacoby and Griesdorn laced a triple to deep center that made the score 2-1. The Indians changed pitchers bringing in Beth May and she struck out Becca Dwenger and got Melissa Bruggeman to line out to third to end the inning. In the bottom of the seventh inning the Cardinals looked like they might not be able to complete the comeback as the first two batters were retired. Jackie Scheer got things going with a triple to left field and she scored the tying run when Emily Phlipot singled to third. Phlipot promptly stole second and Stacy Timmerman reached on an infield single. Phlipot was off with the crack of the bat and rounded third and on a bang-bang play at the plate was called safe to win the game 3-2. “We could have folded the tents in the seventh inning when we got two quick outs,” Griesdorn said. “Jackie (Scheer) was able to find the gap and the left fielder made a heck of a try at it. Emily (Phlipot) hit the ball hard and the third baseman bobbled the ball a little bit and she hustled and beat the ball out for a hit. She stole second and on a hustle play she scored.” Fort Recovery got their two runs in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Kinsey Wenning doubled to left and went to third on a sacrifice ground out. Amy Hart reached on an infield hit with Wenning scoring. Jessica Siegrist drew a walk and Hannah Snyder reached on an infield single to load the bases. Hart came home with the second run on a bases loaded walk to Heather Schmackers. “The key is that we haven’t been able to bunch hits together all year,” Griesdorn said. “We put the ball in play, but we haven’t got the one, two, three or four hits in a row. We can’t wait until the sixth inning to start doing it. Michelle hit the ball hard three times and got two hits and Jackie hit the ball hard, but we have to get everybody else in the lineup to hit the ball.” The Cardinals will complete the suspended game against the Versailles Tigers tonight and will play a non-league game after that. |
