By BRIAN SMITH Sports Editor Erika Thornsberry smacked a two-out, two-strike, bases-loaded pitch past the third baseman to bring in the tying and winning run in the bottom of the sixth to give the Riders a 6-5 Western Buckeye League victory over Ottawa-Glandorf.
“This was a really big win,” St. Marys coach Sue Grothause said. “We got a lead and then O-G came back. We lost focus in those middle inninngs. Hopefully we can focus more and not have that lapse in the middle of the game.” The Riders rallied from a 5-4 deficit in the sixth inning. Alycia Lykins got a pinch hit single to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning. “Alycia came in and put the ball in play,” Grothause said. “She came in and made things happen.” Tasha Fowler followed that with a sacrifice bunt that got Lykins to second base. Megan Schlater singled to put runners at the corners. Two batters later, Bailey Smith, who had homered earler in the game, struck out with the bases loaded and one down. St. Marys’ rally chance came down to Thornsberry, who worked the count and fouled off several pitches before lining a 3-2 pitch down theline for a go-ahead hit. St. Marys built a 4-0 lead after picking up two runs in the first on a Bailey Smith home run that lined over the centerfield fence. The Riders added two more insurance runs in the third when they used three hits to drive in two runs. Rachel Wale singled in the third run of the game. The fourth run scored on a wild pitch. The Riders would need those extra runs. Ottawa-Glandorf shaved the lead to 4-3 after getting three hits, a sac fly and a walk to hammer out three runs. An inning later, O-G took the lead. After getting the first two runners out, Thornsberry gave up a walk and three straight singles. St. Marys improved to 9-5 on the season, 3-2 in the Western Buckeye League. Thornsberry went the distance in the circle, giving up nine hits and five runs while striking out three batters. The Riders pounded out their six runs on nine hits. Bailey Smith ended the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Schlater was 3-for-4. Thornsberry went 2-for-4.
