By RANDY WILKER EL Sports Correspondent WAPAKONETA — At the Coldwater wrestling Invitational it came down to the final match between St. Marys and Troy to battle for first place, but the ‘Riders got beat.
Tuesday evening the ‘Riders participated in the Western Buckeye League five team pool tournament held at Wapakoneta, and unlike at Coldwater the ‘Riders used void matches to eventually win the tournament. “It helped us tremendously that we had all the voids tonight,” St. Marys coach Larry Gruber said. “I still saw a lot of things that we have to go back and work on. I did not see good wrestling out here tonight, but we will take the win.” Going into the final round the ‘Riders had three match wins and Wapakoneta had three match wins and St. Marys and Wapakoneta competed against each other in the final round. The match started out with an exchange of voids and at 119 pounds the ‘Riders received another six points on a Redskin void, but Wapakoneta got the first decision at 125 pounds when Brian Bailey scored an 8-5 decision over Jordan Price. The ‘Riders got the first pin when Josh Toler pinned Zach Gonterman 1:13 into the second period. Mitch Beemer scored a 19-6 majority decision over Garrett Yahl at 135 pounds. Both teams exchanged pins at 140 and 145 pounds, but Kirk Wietholter scored a 10-6 decision over Corey Bailey at 152 pounds. Tyler Sawmiller and Paul Lauth each got pins in the 160 and 171 class, but Tyler Shipp got a pin over Nathan Brown at 189. After a void win by Nathan Brown at 215, Marcus Neal finished the match with a pin over Adam Byrne 45 seconds into the second period. The team score was 45-31 in favor of St. Marys. In the first round the ‘Riders had no trouble defeating the Ottawa-Glandorf Titans 69-6. The only victory by O-G was a pin by Adam Bockrath over Daryl Mabry. In the second round the ‘Riders had a bye and in the third round St. Marys had three pins, a default victory and a 16-6 victory at 152 pounds to defeat Bath 46-24. In the fourth round the ‘Riders had little trouble with Defiance winning 63-15. The only Defiance victories were a 3-0 decision over Zach Hedrick at 119 pounds and a pin over Yahl at 135 pounds. “There are a few wrestlers who are stepping up and showing improvement,” Gruber said. “The difference tonight was if you had a full team. If you had a full team it helped you a lot.” The ‘Riders will wrestle next at the Marion Harding Invitational on Dec. 29 and 30. |
