By RANDY WILKER EL Sports Correspondent MINSTER — The Minster ACME baseball team just didn’t have it in game one of a doubleheader against Fort Loramie losing 8-3, but they rebounded strong in the second game with a 12-5 victory.
“We had too many errors in the first game,” Minster head coach Mark Wiss said. “There were too many balls that we didn’t make plays on and we left too many guys on base.” Fort Loramie got on the board first in game one with a pair of runs in the first inning. With a runner on first, Mitch Ahlers grounded into a fielder’s choice. Following a pop up, Jay Schulze singled and Andy Long walked to load the bases. Ahlers and Schulze scored on a single to left by James McGowan. Minster tied the game with runs in the second and third. In the second Tim Brown walked and with one out Brian Phlipot walked. Brown scored on fielder’s choice hit by Josh Corbit. In the third Brian Mueller walked and stole second. After a ground out, Mueller scored on a ground out by Vince Fullenkamp. Fort Loramie doubled their score in the fourth on a double by Schulze and a triple by McGowan. McGowan scored on a ground out by Jake Boerger. Fort Loramie doubled the score again with four runs in the fifth before Minster scored a run in the sixth for the 8-3 final. “The first game wasn’t a good game for us in all aspects,” Wiss said. “We had a couple players not hustle and a couple players came to the plate with runners in scoring position and didn’t get the job done.” In the second game it was like night and day as Minster scored 10 runs in the first three innings. “In the second game Eric Trushaw came in and threw strikes for us,” Wiss said. “We got on top early and stole some bases and set the tone.” Minster (5-6) got ahead with a run in the first inning. After a walk to Mueller, he stole second and scored on a two-out single by Brown. Fort Loramie answered in the second inning with three runs. Jake Boerger singled and with one out scored on a double by Kyle Turner. Turner scored on a single by Mike Boerger, who scored on a wild pitch. In the second and third innings Minster broke the game open with nine runs. In the second inning Brian Phlipot singled and stole second. He went to third on a balk and scored on a single by Corbit. After a walk to Sam Otting, both runners moved up on a wild pitch and Corbit scored on a balk. Otting came home on a wild pitch to give Minster a 4-3 lead. With one out, Mueller reached on a hit batsman and advanced to third on an error by the pitcher on a pickoff attempt. He scored after a walk to Bob Gruber on a double steal. In the third inning Minster batted around scoring five runs on only two hits and one Fort Loramie error. Also in the inning Minster walked twice and had two hit batters. Both teams scored two more runs the rest of the game for the 12-5 final. “Eric Trushaw pitched a great game going six innings and Gruber came in and finished the game,” Wiss said. Minster is off until next Thursday when they entertain St. Marys.
