ST. MARYS – For Super Bowl parties there are absolutely two essentials, a TV and plenty of refreshments. People are already gearing up for the big game by stocking up on snack food and possibly a big screen TV.
Super Bowl day is the biggest snacking day of the year, says local grocery store managers. Itr even outpaces New Year's Day as a major snacking day and almost outpaces the biggest foodie day of the year – Thanksgiving. It's more than likely the elbow bend and lift will be the most vigorous exercise of the day as Super Bowl party goers chow down on chips, dips, pretzels, pizza, popcorn and more along with gallons of soft drinks and beer. Krogers and Chief is ready for the onslaught of hungry footballs fans and managers at both groceries expect lots of people stocking up on snacks. Assistant Store Manager Tom Burke expects “tremendous sales.” Cheif's manager Scott Adams also expect a boom in snack sales. “Tommorow should be really good,” Adams saidd. “We got special beer displays and chip displays. Tomorrwo is a one-day sale with Super Bowl goods like chicken wings, pop and water.” “We have “huge displays of Tostitos, pretzels (and) beer up front,” said Assistant Manager Tom Burke. Burke says too that deli trays and shriimp trays are very popular. Pizzas are also popular food items on Super Bowl Sunday, Burke said. Party planners will also find large displays of soft drinks. “This is one of the biggest snacking holidays,” Burke said. “As far as Christmas, it's different, but in terms of snacking, it's one of the biggest (snack days. It's the) party atmosphere,” According to Os Davis of Associated Content, “Super Bowl represents thethe No. 1 at-home party event of the year.” Davis says more than $55 million will be spent on food alone including 15 tons of chips and 4,000 tons of popcorn, adding that if all that popcorn was strung on string it would ring the Earth almost five and a half times. Surprisingly, the biggest snack food winner of the day is the avocado. Davis reports that 12 million pounds of avocado are sold to make some eight million pounds of guacamole for the big game day party. He also cautions not to forget the day after Super Bowl On Monday, antacid sales rise significantly, 7-Eleven stores, Davis reports, says their antacids sales increase by 20 percent the day after Super Bowl. Six percent of all working Americans will also call in sick the next day, Davis also said. There's still time to get a big screen TV in time for Sunday's big game. Mark Fowler, co-owner of Fowlers TV on East Spring Street, says they are simple to hook up by the do-it-yourselfer. IN addition, if there is a little trouble, help is always just a phone call away. At the TV shop, consumers will find TVs of all sizes from the 15 inch LCD to up to 200 inches for projection TVs. There's LCD TVs, LCD flat panel TVs, and plasma TVs and they are all high definition (HD). High definition TVs offer a stunningly clear picture as compared to regular TV. That high resolution is delivered by increasing the number of lines of resolution on the screen, the more lines and the closer they are together the better the picture quality. A non-HD TV, Fowler explained has 240 lines of resolution, while a HD can have up to 1080 lines resolution. DVDs currently have better line resolution than regular TV and a Blu-Ray DVD is even better yet and has the capability to enhance even regular DVDs. Fowler called the differnce, “shocking, Blu-Ray is very hot right nowm,” he said. Fowler says there's little differnce in quality between and LCD and a plasma TV, noting that the LCD, “kind of works like a Lite Bright,” it's back lit. A plasma screen is doubled paneled with gas between the panels. The one drawback people find with plasma TVs, Fowler said, is occassionally an image will burn into the screen, especially with video games that are left on for a long time. However, he said, he's never seen a permanent burned in image on a plasma TV. “LCDs,” he said, “I would say are the most popular.” Customers will also find projection TVs up to 200 inches available at Fowlers for sale or rent. Fowlers also sells power recliners that fit perfectly into a TV room, whether that room is just a family or living room or a specially designed theater style viewing room. The projection TVs can be used indoors or out, projected on garage doors or on any large white surface. Fowler has even used a projection TV while camping, projection the image onto the side of his van. Shoppers can get flat panel LCDs , 4-inches deep, tthat are made to hang on a wall or big screen TVS designed to sit on furniture. LCDs run from 15 inches to 52 inches, Plasma TVs run up 60 inches and of cource, projection TVs run up 200 inches in size for almost life size viewing.
