By BRIAN SMITH Staff Writer ST. MARYS — Scott Schulte will become the new athletic director at Memorial High School.
Schulte, a varsity assistant football coach and social studies teacher at McBroom Junior High, will move into the full-time position as athletic director this summer. “St. Marys is a unique town,” he said. “We have tremendous student-athletes.” Schulte taught seven years in the St. Marys school district — four years in the high school and three years at McBroom. “He’s a very energetic young man,” Memorial High School principal Mike Makley said. “We liked his passion for the job. He did his homework going into it.” Makely said there were 41 applicants for the job and the school interviewed six people. “I think the athletic programs are in a good state right now,” Schulte said. “My number one goal is to open up lines of communication with the coaches.” The job is more than just standing on the sidelines during games and making a few phone calls, he said. “It’s a full-time position. This job takes a lot of time that people outside of athletics don’t understand,” Schulte said. That hectic job will make continuing as an assistant football coach unlikely, Makely said. “But I’m sure he’ll be in there and helping out at camps and other things,” he said. While Schulte will miss the classroom, he thinks this move will be rewarding. “I enjoy teaching, but I like to think that I’m teaching in a different way to different people,” he said. “I see my role as helping coaches. Schulte worked in the recruiting department at the University of Indianapolis, a fact that gave him a leg up, Makely said. Schulte is the all-time leading rusher at Hillsdale College, where he racked up 4,495 yards on the ground over his four years with the Chargers. Schulte graduated from Hillsdale in 1994. He is a 1990 graduate of Delphos St. Johns High School. Both places had an impact on both his football career and his teaching career. “Both were positive influences,” he said. “First of all, they were good schools. They had good people.” Schulte is the offensive coordinator for the St. Marys football team, a position that helps him right away. He is familiar with the athletes and coaches. Schulte’s football background is important considering the position it holds in athletics in this part of the country. “Northwest Ohio is a unique place when it comes to football,” he said. While the football schedule is taken care of for the next few years with a two-year contract set up with Piqua and a series with Sidney resuming afterwards, St. Marys will have to make a choice in the long term about its opening game, Schulte said. “We have to decide whether we want to keep a game locally or go across the state, considering the cost of gas and travel right now.” In the end, much of the decision has to do with what football coach Doug Frye wants to do, Schulte said. The current athletic director Jason Andrew resigned from the position earlier this spring after two years on the job to take a teaching position at Elida.
