By KAY LOUTH Staff Writer NEW BREMEN — Christmas came early for Carol and Terry Dick of New Bremen thanks in large part to their children.
The couple took a month long trip to Florida in November and on their return home, their children Kim Boroff, Tracy Caudill, Wendy Roebuck and Rob Dick give the Dick’s home a makeover. Carol Dick said she was worried about taking the Florida trip because of her concern about the work she felt she needed to do at her home. “I’ve been sick for 12 years,” Carol Dick said. “I’d gotten behind in my work.” However her children strongly encouraged her to go, telling her not to worry about the work — they would take care of it all. Working some long days and putting in a few night hours as well, the Dicks’ children painted the family room, kitchen, an office, a hallway and stairway, as well as painting a bath and hanging border in the room. The children also stripped wallpaper from a couple of the rooms and also painted all the woodwork. The children picked out the paint colors too as well as buying rugs and curtains. Carol Dick said they also hung pictures were there hadn’t been any before. Over the couch a landscape now hangs in a place of honor where before there was nothing. In the upstairs bedroom, a son-in-law put together a cabinet that had been sitting unassembled in the room for months. “It was such a Godsend,” Carol Dick said. Carol Dick said as they were on their way home from Florida two weeks ago, they got a call from their daughter Caudill, who told them to stop heading north because of icy conditions. The Dicks were traveling with Terry’s brother who didn’t believe Caudill was telling them truth, and a brother-in—law called Caudill, only to find out that there was icy conditions. So the Dicks stopped in Kentucky overnight. On Sunday they continued on their way home. That day, the Dicks got regular reports from their children as they traveled the last leg of the trip, telling the Dicks they couldn’t come home until 12:30 p.m. The Dicks were frequently urged to stop or slow down. In the mean time the couple’s children were in Lima buying rugs, curtains and other items to complete the home makeover. Carol and Terry Dick got home at 12:28 p.m. and pulled up to their home. The Dicks have a small motor home that Terry Dick calls a bus. One of the phone calls the Dicks got on their way home was that they couldn’t park in the driveway. “It was so cute,” Carol Dick said, “The kids were all hanging out the door saying, “‘Bus driver, move that bus.’” The Dicks said they are pleased with their spruced up home. “It was gorgeous,” Carol Dick said. “What a joy it was to come home to.” In addition to the painting and wallpapering, the children set the table with Carol Dick’s new china and napkins. The Dicks have two schnauzers, Sissy and Samantha. Rob Dick stayed at his parent’s home while they were away to take care of the little furry companions while the sisters came over to work during the hours they could, including some night time hours. The sons-in-laws got involved too. There’s still three rooms to be finished, two bedrooms and a bath, but even the bedrooms got rearranged. The Dick family is going to finish the remaining three rooms after the holiday season. For Carol Dick, the whole experience was a blessing from God. “I just went to bed and cried,” she said. “It was such a sweet thing the kids did.”
