Bazaar raises church funds Print E-mail

NEW BREMEN — Homemade candy and cookies lined the tables alongside Holiday craft items at a local church’s Holiday Bazaar. St. Peter’s Church, located at 303 N. Franklin St., New Bremen, hosted their First Annual Holiday Bazaar Saturday, to raise funds to build a new church steeple at a cost of $60,000.
Baked goods and craft items were for sale in the church’s Adult Sunday School Room. Two viewings of the movie, The Nativity, the story of Jesus’ birth, were held in the church’s Sanctuary, with free popcorn available to movie goers. A 50/50 drawing was also held.
“We’ve been coming with ideas all year to come up with funds for the steeple,” President of Women’s Fellowship and Christian Education, Deb Simon-Heinfeld said.  “The more we saw things come together the more excited we got.”
Simon-Heinfeld said that despite Saturday’s snowfall, the bazaar drew visitors from St. Marys, Minster and New Bremen.
“The weather may have hampered the business,” she said, “but snow is festive.”
While most of the items available for sale at the bazaar were made by adults in the congregation, some of the items, such as small planters filled with treats were prepared by children.
“They made reindeer planters and the candy in them,” church member Monica Fledderjohann said. “(The) kids had a ball making them.”
The small congregation of approximately 50 active church members has held two  fundraisers earlier in the year. During Easter they sold hyacinths and tulips, and in August they held an ice cream social, raising approximately $1,500.
In November, the congregation decided to hold the bazaar.
The Rev. Steve Wills noted the congregation has remained focused on the true meaning of Christmas while organizing the bazaar.
“We have good positive attitudes with lots of creative ideas,” Wills said. “It’s for a good cause. We have a real festive spirit.”
St. Peter’s will donate 10 percent of the proceeds raised from the bazaar to Toys for Tots of St. Marys, Wills said.
