By B.J. BETHEL Assistant Managing Editor NEW BREMEN — New Bremen Village Councilors expressed intentions to move along with plans to make changes to its current recycling plan at a meeting held Tuesday.
After the village recently completed a series of submitted surveys from local residents, the Albers family declined to offer curbside recycling service. The Albers showed an interest in starting the service during the early part of 2007. The village is considering adding chutes to the west side of the recycling center located on South Herman Street, which is adjacent to the New Bremen Public Works Building. This would allow residents to drop off recyclables at any time and not wait for the once-a-month pickup service the village has currently. “People could put their recyclables in these chutes anytime they wanted and not wait until the second Tuesday of the month,” Village Administrator Wayne York said. “Some people have it pile up and they can’t wait a month to get rid of it. If we want to encourage recycling, we have to do something.” Adding chutes to the building would make it easier to drop off goods instead of having a dumpster on location. It also would avoid some of the problems, such as paper and plastic blowing outside. York said the village plans to meet with the local Boy Scout troop to discuss any future plans with the recyclables. The Scouts currently collect recyclables to help fund troop activities. “We want to come up with something that’s workable,” York said. A second reading of an ordinance to increase village water rates 4.5 percent was passed. The raise in rates was proposed in order to allow for a larger buffer in funds in case of a breakdown in equipment or emergency. Currently, there is a $5 per month charge for water in the village up to 200 cubic feet of water. The rate after 200 cubic feet will be raised from $1.70 per cubic foot to $1.80. Council passed a second reading of an ordinance to rezone the west portion of Lot 35 on Franklin Street from R-2 to C-1 in order to allow for the construction of a parking lot. A third reading of an ordinance to make changes to the current zoning code, including the addition of an agricultural zone, was also passed. First reading for an ordinance for a 3 percent pay raise for full-time village employees was passed. The village will hold its annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 6. Immediately afterward will be a grand opening on the Lock One canal area. |
