By MARY BARGDILL Staff Writer NEW BREMEN — Spanish IV students in Amanda Wehrman’s class will be eligible to earn college credit through the University of Findlay, beginning in the fall.
Wehrman will receive training in May through the University. The purpose of earning college credit is to give the high students a jump start on college courses, at a reduced rate. In July, the board will decide if the responsibility of cost of the course will be entirely up to the parents of students enrolled or if the school district will pick up a part of, or the entire fees. The cost for a three quarter hour course is $250, and the cost of a four credit hour course is $300. "I think we’ll start next fall," said high school principal, Frank Borchers. He also noted there were between 20 and 25 students expected to take Spanish IV. Students will need to make sure the credit for the classes will transfer to the college of their choice. "It’s entirely determined by the college," New Bremen School Superintendent Ann Harvey said of whether or not colleges will accept the credits of the foreign language class. The board also discussed potential summer maintenance projects for 2007. The grade five classrooms will receive new lighting fixtures, white boards, and paint. They will not have new flooring put in at this time. Cost for the repairs is $3,000 per classroom, with four rooms needing repairs for a total of $12,000. The board is looking to replace the lighting because it’s a quick energy saver, quick pay off. "I think lighting would be money well spent," said board member Larry Tangeman. A junior high classroom will have work done to repair damage caused by water. It will also receive new white boards and lighting fixtures at an estimated cost of $5,600. The exterior door at Elementary School office will be replaced at an estimated cost of $3,200. "We’re in a pretty desperate situation with e-mail," said Harvey. "It’s a planned expense," she added of upgrading the servers. Two new servers would be added, one for e-mailing and the other for archiving. The junior high school asphalt will be patched to get by this year, more complete renovations will be handled by the village next year. The board passed a motion agree to look more closely at the proposed constitutional amendment to ensure students who attend public schools in the state of Ohio receive a quality education, as is their fundamental right. The board would like to petition to get the proposed amendment on the ballot. Harvey said the New Bremen School District will be eligible for a $2,000 grant for the Core Curriculum, for students who will graduate in 2014. It is primarily geared towards math and science curriculum. She also mentioned that Scott Kuening, on behalf of the Lock One Group offered to pay to have the sidewalks at the west entrance of the James Dicke II Stadium widened to better accommodate unloading of equipment for the auditorium. Some board members were concerned if the sidewalks could handle the weight of a trailer driven on it. They were also concerned how wide the sidewalk would be. During an executive session, the board formerly approved the agreement the teachers union made on April 4. Contact Mary at: nbreporter@ theeveningleader.com
