Church brings back corn maze Print E-mail

ST. MARYS —  A twisting corn maze, hay rides, games, and hot dogs roasted over an open fire — these are just some of the activities visitors to a local fall festival can enjoy. The Second Ever Fall Harvest Festival, sponsored by the Living Hope Assembly of God at 1130 Indiana Ave., St. Marys, is an event entire families can enjoy.
“It’s just a place for the whole family to come and enjoy for the afternoon,” Administrative Assistant of Living Hope Assembly of God Kathy Korn said. “There’s something for everyone — young and old.”
Numerous games will be available for children to play, including putt-putt golf. As children walk from game to game, they will receive candy — just as they would from trick-or-treating.
“We’ll give them candy from game to game instead of house to house,” Korn said. “The kids last year got lots of candy. I expect it will be no less this year.”
The corn maze will be open from 3 to 9 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. Hot dogs and marshmallows will be cooked over a campfire and hay rides will be available.
On Sunday, the Fall Festival will be in full swing from 3 to 9 p.m. as well. Inflatable toys, including a double slide and two bounce houses will be available.
Chili soup will be kept warm in a large cast iron pot over a fire.
“We have people bring in different recipes of chili and we dump them all in together,” Youth and Family Life Pastor Tony Griffith said. “It’s amazing.”
The idea for the corn maze and festival began two years ago as a community outreach project for the church. For this year’s festival and corn maze, more than 60 congregation members volunteered to ensure its success.
“We just want to give back to the community — let them know we care about them,” Korn said. “We’re just sharing the love of Christ with the community.”
The corn maze will wind through seven acres of land located to the north and west sides of the church and adjoining parking lot. Earlier in the season, the corn stalks were mowed down to create walking paths. Grass seeds were also sown to make the ground more even and easier to walk on.
“It’s much bigger than last year,” Griffith said.
The theme for the corn maze is Romans Roads. Signs with scriptures written on them will be placed throughout the maze. Those who complete the maze with all the correct answers will receive a free soft drink.  For better visibility, the corn maze will be illuminated by the Homeland Security emergency vehicle which will be parked on the premises.
Cost of the corn maze is $2 per person or $5 per family. Admittance is free for children under age 3, and all children under age 10 are to be accompanied by an adult.
Food and games of the Fall Harvest Festival are free. For more information call 419-394-5711, or go to www.livinghopeaog.com and look at upcoming events.
