By BRIAN SMITH Sports Editor LIMA – Goliath brought its ‘A’ game.
Outshooting the Thunderbirds 30-0, the St. Marys girls soccer team picked up a 13-0 win in a sectional soccer match-up over Lima Central Catholic on Wednesday night at Bath High School. “We have been practicing hard so we didn’t have a let down,” St. Marys coach Paul Dingledine said. “We played them earlier in the year we beat them something like 7-0.” That threshhold was reached midway through the first half. Sara Wolfe scored four goals and the Roughriders won their 12th straight game and improved to 16-1 on the season in a game the Riders scored double digits for the first time in 2007. More importantly, St. Marys moves on to play Kenton at Bath High School on Saturday at 3 p.m. While St. Marys carved up the LCC defense and controlled the ball the entire night, the T-Birds had a goal taken away and knocked in a St. Marys goal with an errant kick. It was that kind of night for the T-Birds. The field at Lima Bath features a siren that blares at the end of each half. It might have well been the nets needing serious medical help. Wolfe opened the scoring with a goal around the 34-minute mark. Lyndsay Nelson and Alysia Nagel followed with goals shortly thereafter, starting a night that saw three Riders go for the soccer cycle. Wolfe scored four, Nelson had three goals, and Nagel scored a pair of goals. “We are tournament ready right now and the girls are ready to play,” Dingledine said. St. Marys outshot the T-Birds 18-0 in the first half, building an 8-0 lead in the Riders’ first game since eight days. The second half was more benign. Dingledine was able to wholesale substitute i the second half, a luxury that he had many times this year. Comparing the two scores of the games this year between the teams, Dingledine said that because LCC was able to hang with the Riders longer into the game earlier this season, the 13-0 performance was no fluke. LCC lost a goal in the second half after the official ruled a violation on the St. Marys goalkeeper. After the T-Birds converted the penalty kick and the score went on the board, the official reversed his ruling and took the point off the board. Insult added to injury a few minutes later when a T-Bird accidently booted a ball back into her own net for another Rider score to make it 12-0. Brandi McCollister and Sam Davenport also added goals for the Roughriders. In the first game, Kenton shut out Ada 4-0. Kenton is 4-11-2 on the season. The Wildcats got a goal from Mandy McCullough. |
