By MARY BARGDILL Staff Writer ST. MARYS — American Legion Post 323 recognized the efforts of local law enforcement as they awarded Al Solomon, Sheriff of Auglaize County, the 2007 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award.
"We’re very proud of the people we pick for this," said Post Commander John McJunkin."Thank you." Family members and colleagues were present as Solomon received the award. "I accept this on behalf of all law enforcement officers. There are a lot of deserving officers in Auglaize County and this area," said Sheriff Solomon. Solomon began working in the sheriff’s office in 1979. He started out as a deputy/dispatcher, and then became a corrections officer. He gradually moved up in the ranks to detective, sergeant, then captain. In January of 2005, he became sheriff. "It’s very gratifying. I appreciate everything the Legion does to support the local community," said Solomon. According to Floyd Braun, chairman of the Americanism Committee, this is the fifth year the legion has given the awards for teacher, fireman, and law enforcement officer of the year. Theresa Rowen, a first-grade teacher at West Elementary School, was the recipient of the 2007 Teacher of the Year Award. Stan Brown, a fireman for the St. Marys Township Fire Department, and the former chief, was recipient of the 2007 Fireman of the Year Award. Braun said he keeps track of potential candidates by clipping articles from newspapers, and keeping a file. People also call him to recommend candidates, especially for teachers. "He’s just one super guy and he deserves this honor," Braun said of Solomon. Contact Mary at: nbreporter@ theeveningleader.com |
