By RANDY WILKER EL Sports Correspondent LIMA — It was a frustrating day of wrestling for the St. Marys Roughriders in the 2007 Western Buckeye League wrestling tournament held at Lima Shawnee Saturday.
Only one Rider wrestler advanced to the finals and only two others advanced to the consolation final. Daryl Mabry was the lone Rider to advance to a championship match. He defeated Ryan Rider of Shawnee 6-1 to win the 140-pound match. Mabry was able to advance rather easily through his weight class. He began by pinning Aaron Swanson of Defiance with 1:15 left in the second period. After defeating Ryan Hanneman of O-G, he defeated Zach Gray of Celina 17-6 in the semi-final. The other two Riders who advanced were Paul Lauth at 171 pounds and Nathan Brown in the 215 pound match. Lauth had a tough chore to get through his group. He defeated Austin Trisel of Celina 3-0, but in the semi-final he was pinned with 26 seconds left in overtime by John Saffle of Elida. In the consolation semi final Lauth defeated Cameron Harmon of Bath with a pin with 1:18 left in the match and in the final Lauth got some revenge as he defeated Ben Roop of Van Wert 2-1 in overtime to finish third. In the 215 pound division Nathan Brown advanced to the semi-final with a void, but lost a tough semi-final 9-4 to Mitch Miracle of Celina. In the consolation semifinal Brown pinned Mike Hainline of Kenton with 1:21 left in the second period and pinned Tyler Hurlburt of Shawnee with nine seconds left in the second period to finish third. It was rough from the word go for the rest of the Roughriders. Joel Knous was pinned in his first match at 103 pounds by BJ Miller of Defiance with 58 seconds left in the first period. In the consolation match he was defeated by RJ Baskett of Celina 15-0. Two Riders failed to make weight. One of them was Josh Cisco at 112 pounds. Cisco was 7-0 in leagues meets during the season and 26-0 overall. The other Rider was Tyler Sawmiller at 160 pounds. “It has been tough,” Riders head coach Larry Gruber said. “You have to wrestle for six minutes. There have been some close matches or matches where we have been ahead and then comeback and get pinned.” At 119 pounds Zach Hedrick lost a tough match to Tylor Thees of Celina 5-4, but defeated Tanner Zwiebel of Wapakoneta 10-2 and lost another close match 3-2 to Josh Beamer of Bath in the semifinal. Jordan Price advanced to the 125 pound consolation semifinal, but was defeated by Brian Bailey of Wapakoneta 10-2. At 135 pounds Sean Barnett was defeated 15-0 by Chris Heath of Van Wert and 18-2 by Terry Wagonhauser of Defiance. Brad Hardee was pinned by Andrew Leis of Elida and then pinned in the consolation match at 145 by Aaron Baldwin of Kenton. At 152 pounds Kirk Wietholter was pinned by Jordan Davis of Celina, but defeated Dustin Ray 20-11. He was defeated by Cody Green 9-0 of Elida. At 185 pounds Kevin Martin was pinned by Zach Painter of Bath and pinned by Dimetri Myers of Kenton. Marcus Neal at 285 pounds was defeated by Adam Byrne of Wapakoneta, but held a 6-2 lead over Chris Wilkins of Celina before Wilkins turned the tables and pinned Neal with 21.4 seconds left in the match. “We have had so many opportunities,” Gruber concluded. “Like Marcus Neal. He had his opponent on his back so many times but couldn’t pin him and time runs out and he gets pinned.” In the tournament the Riders had six wrestlers advance to the consolation semifinal, but only two wrestlers advanced to the consolation final. In the team standings Elida won the tournament for the second year in a row with 196.5 points. Van Wert was second with 173.5 and Celina was third with 151.5. The Riders finished eighth with 56.5 points. The Riders finished 13-4 in dual meets heading into the sectionals next Friday and Saturday in Fostoria. “Our goal is always to advance as many wrestlers as we can,” Gruber said.
