The Meyer family of Wapakoneta, Taryn, 5, Jori, 7, and Preston, 2, work together to find the perfect pumpkin.
By MARY BARGDILL Staff Writer NEW BREMEN — Hay rides, pony rides, and of course — choosing the perfect pumpkin — were just some of the Sunday highlights for children who participated in Fall Family Fun Day in New Bremen.
Located at the intersection of Ohio 66 and Southland Road, in New Bremen, this is the second year the owners of Green Thumb Produce, Ned and Sherry Warner have hosted the event, geared towards entertaining the entire family. Fall Family Fun Day is an opportunity for families to “just enjoy the time together,” Sherry Warner said. “Last year they had such a good time,” she said. “They really enjoyed it.” The event is held early enough in the season before the first frost. Also it does not conflict with other local fall festivals, such as the New Bremen Pumpkin Festival and the Minster Oktoberfest, Sherry Warner said. The event was open to the public and free of charge, which included snack items of lemonade, apples and cookies. Children and their parents strolled about, looking for the perfect pumpkin from the hundreds that were available. Children also participated in face painting, balloon animals, and bean bag toss. An artist made characters on pumpkins for children, and a clown strolled about, making children laugh. Many families also took the opportunity to look over the display of antique tractors. Pony rides and hay rides on a wagon through the pumpkin patch were also favorites with many of the children, including Ashton Heitkamp, 6, of New Bremen. She attended the Fall Family Fun Day with her little sister, Olivia, 1, and her parents, Bob and Amy Heitkamp. This is the second year the Heitkamps attended the event, and they enjoyed this year as much as last year. The main difference was the weather. “Last year was cooler,” Bob Heitkamp said.
