ST. MARYS — Two parking spaces in front of the new First Financial Bank
in downtown could move to 30-minute parking if an ordinance gains city
councilors’ approval.
Members of the St. Marys Traffic Committee Monday night agreed to recommend the two parking spaces in front of the building be switched from two-hour parking to 30-minute parking. John Wale spoke at last week’s council meeting requesting four spaces be converted into either 15-minute or 30-minute parking after hearing comments from elderly customers. “I think we see what two will do and start it off that way,” committee member Dennis Vossler said. “That does accommodate the coffee shop if someone wants to have a cup of coffee.” There are two 15-minute parking spaces along Spring Street. One is in front of the city building and the other is in front of Guarnieri Pizzeria. Councilor-at-Large Jim Harris, who attended the meeting as an interested citizen, said he fielded calls from elderly citizens regarding parking in front of the building. Harris then contacted Wale and invited him to address council last week. Safety-Service Director Tom Hitchcock said he did not have a preference on the topic. Enforcement, Hitchcock said, could be difficult. “It’s about impossible to enforce,” Hitchcock said. “We will enforce it if it becomes a problem. If we see someone park there all day, we can have the police department come down.” The proposed ordinance, which could be presented to councilors during the Dec. 30 meeting, is expected to be read three times.
