BOE OKs Program Print E-mail

ST. MARYS — Board members approved a new program for local students during their monthly meeting Wednesday evening. St. Marys Board of Education members approved the Veterinary Technology program that will be held at Coldwater High School for the 2010-11 school year, a Tri-Star advisory program.
"They've been looking at this for several years, they've done their homework," Board Member Rees McKee said. "They've gone to several complexes that have this."
McKee said the program will prime students for a career in the veterinary field.
"Basically what they're doing is preparing the kids to be veterinary assistants with the basic know-how," he said.
Superintendent Mary Riepenhoff said all nine school boards in the area have to approve the program, and the teaching will be done through Coldwater's staff.
"They'll be using current teachers from Coldwater," she said. "Local vets have already pledged their support."
During the meeting, Riepenhoff also noted the staggered bell times for next school year, with the high school-middle school complex going from 7:25 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., West Elementary going from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. and East Elementary going from 8:40 a.m. to 3:25 p.m.
"Holy Rosary is still undecided," Transportation Supervisor Dan Grothause said.
Memorial High School Principal Mike Makley said the school's choirs will hold a concert at 2 p.m. Sunday and the Rider Pep Band will play at the Ohio State women's basketball game Dec. 22. McBroom Junior High Principal Ken Neff said the school will hold its concert Monday evening.
Board members then went into executive session to discuss personnel — employment and compensation of a public official — and no action was taken when they reconvened into regular session.
The St. Marys Board of Education will hold a work session 6 p.m. Dec. 16 at the District Service Center, and its next regularly scheduled meeting will be 7:30 p.m. Jan. 13 in the St. Marys City Council Chambers, with Wiley as president pro tem.
