New Knoxville lights up village Print E-mail

NEW KNOXVILLE — A local village welcomed the icon of the holiday season on Sunday evening as part of an annual tradition. The Village of New Knoxville held its Community Tree Lighting on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. at the Village Administration building where community members of all ages gathered for the annual event.
“It’s been a long-time community tradition,” Organizer Tess Elshoff said.
The event kicked off with residents enjoying hot chocolate, hot cider and cookies. Local children could stop by the tables set up with various stations at which they could make an ornament for the community Christmas tree, decorate and eat a Christmas cookie and color a Christmas picture.
“It’s a way for different organizations to come together to put this together,” Elshoff said.
She said some of the participating village organizations included the Garden Club, New Knoxville Historical Society and the Village of New Knoxville.
“Also participating were several small businesses,” she said. “It varies every year.”
She said the New Knoxville Girl and Boy Scouts also help out, in addition to the support of Mayor Keith Leffel, New Knoxville Fire Department, Tom Quellhorst and Property Improvements.
“It’s a way to help celebrate the welcoming of the holiday season with community,” Elshoff said. “And it’s something for the kids to do.”
Six-year-old Erica Weadock sat down to decorate one of the ornaments for the New Knoxville Community tree on Sunday and said she was going to ask Santa for some books.
“I want three Fancy Nancy books,” said Erica, the daughter of New Knoxville residents Greg and Amy Weadock.
Greg Weadock stood by while Erica added the string to her ornament.
“It was something to entertain the kids and give them something to do,” he said of why the family came out to the event. “And to see Santa Claus.”
In addition to participating in the various activities, residents also welcomed the arrival of Santa Claus with the Christmas song, placed their ornaments on the tree outside the building and lit the tree.
The Village of New Bremen will light its Christmas tree at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Lock One Park, and the Village of Minster will hold its tree decorating ceremony at noon on Saturday at the village gazebo.
