ST. MARYS — Local children had the opportunity to visit with Santa and participate in holiday activities on Friday. Santa Claus arrived in St. Marys Friday morning with a mini parade and visited with children at his house in Memorial Park before the annual Kids Free Christmas Show at Memorial High School.
Santa, transported by a pony from Lininger’s Pony Rides, was preceded by a St. Marys police officer, St. Marys fire truck and SummerFest Queen Richelle Buehler who was carried by Miller Funeral Home.
Taylor Sparks, 11, and Libbi Leffler, 10, were the first two children in line to see Santa on Friday — they both said they were asking for Ripsticks.
“I like that you get presents,” Libbi said, while Taylor said she liked spending time with her family.
“You get to hang out with your family for a whole day,” Taylor said.
The two St. Marys residents said they were heading over to watch “Mickey Saves Santa” in the high school’s Performing Arts Center as part of the Kids Free Christmas Show after speaking with Santa.
Jacob Shinabery, 4, waited for Santa Claus with his grandmother, Judy Highley, on Friday.
“I want the big robot on Transformers 2,” Jacob said.
Highley said the two came out for Santa.
“We’re getting into the Christmas spirit,” she said, adding the two will be decorating their Christmas tree later in the day.
The admission for the show, St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce Director Kelly Kill, said was a canned good.
“They have to bring a canned good or nonperishable for Agape,” she said.       The Kids Free Christmas Show was held at 2 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Memorial High School, and is sponsored by the retail division of the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce. Area children were greeted by Santa Claus as they enter the auditorium and had the opportunity to win one of more than 50 prizes, including two new bikes.
Kill said the event is always held the Friday after Thanksgiving.
“Santa’s the big icon for this time of year,” she said. “Everybody wants to see Santa — that first glimpse of Santa is what children’s dreams are made of.”
Sponsors for this year’s event included Fowler’s TV, Hudson Jewelers, Grand Carriage Auto Repair, Domino’s Pizza, The Island Dress Shoppe, St. Marys Chrysler-Jeep, Schwieterman’s Pharmacies, Kellermeyer’s Men’s Clothing, Minster Bank, NAPA of St. Marys, Morning Glorys, Dr. Jeffrey Chivington, St. Marys Hobby Center, Larry Schaaf Auto Sales, DJ Supply, Pat’s Pet Plus, Nelson Body Shop, First Financial Bank and Trackside Pizza and Subs.
