Village sees flurry of bids Print E-mail

NEW BREMEN — A local village opened bids on Wednesday for a project that will benefit its service departments. The village of New Bremen opened bids at 2 p.m. for the electric service department building that will be located in the villages industrial park.
“It was amazing,” Village Administrator Wayne York said of Wednesday’s results. “We had 15 general contractors and 19 mechanical contractors.”
York said there were many different combination bids — such as  heating and plumbing — that will be have to sorted through to figure out the best result.
“Heyne Construction of Minster is the apparent low with a bid of $788,130 with a combination bid for everything,” he said.
York noted combinations of the mechanical bids, such as plumbing, heating and the standby generator, could take some of the work from Heyne.
“They are the apparent low for the building alone with a bid  of $648,455,” York said.
Garmann Miller Associates of Minster are the architects for the project, and York said the estimated the building to cost $990,000.
“We had contractors from Findlay, Lima, Bellefontaine, Dayton, Greenville, Arcanum, plus the local contractors from Mercer, Auglaize and Shelby counties,” York said.
He said the architects should have recommendations for New Bremen Village Councilors by the council’s next meeting on Dec. 8.
“Every seat was full,” York said of the village’s training room where the bid openings took place on Wednesday. “Almost everyone of these bidders had somebody there.”
York said it was the first time the village had seen a full house in the 33-capacity room and attributed it to the time of year.
“Obviously, this was an exciting time to bid a project, going into winter,” he said.
The New Bremen Electric Department personnel will be installing approximately $40,000 of the electric materials for the building in-house.
“The total project will come under $800,000 in any case — at least 20 percent below estimate,” York said.
In addition to serving the electric department, the new building will also provide storage areas for other New Bremen service departments. The site for the new building will be lots 16 and 17 at the village’s Bunker Hill Industrial Park.
