ST. MARYS — Students in a local class will be holding an event for area
children next month but are looking for the public's help with the
preparation.
The students in Megan Tobe's High School of Business Leadership class at Memorial High School will be holding a Christmas party for area children and are holding a drive beginning next week to receive presents for the children. The party will be the main project for the year, Tobe said. The class was split into multiple groups to handle each aspect of the project. "Our group is working on donations for every other group and doing the budget," Hannah Yaney said. "We're also making ads and putting them up around the community." Camron Harrison, also in Yaney's group, said he will be heading to the St. Marys Chamber. "I'm going to the Chamber of Commerce," he said. "I'll be putting up ads to get more donations for the project." Megan Sudduth said she was able to secure the McBroom Cafeteria for the event. "It'll be from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Dec. 16," Sudduth said, adding the event is open to children from ages 3 to 12. Logan Simons, who is partnered with Holly Sudhoff, said his group is in charge of organizing the toy and shoebox drive that will begin Monday and end Nov. 24. "We have bins in all the schools and we're asking people to donate show boxes and slightly used toys," he said. Natasha Rickard, Makayla Buehler and Jake Edens said their group is in charge of the games and activities the night of the event. "We split it up," Rickard said, adding she was head of games. "We'll play Santa Says and musical chairs with Christmas music." Buehler said she is in charge of activities and crafts. "We'll write letters to Santa and make Christmas ornaments and decorate Christmas cookies," she said. Edens said he will help supervise. "I'm in charge of (overseeing) the kids play the games and bringing board games," he said. "We'll play pin the nose on Rudolph, Candy Land and Polar Express." Rickard said one of the challenges their group had was figuring out the location. "We had to talk to the principal about it," she said, adding Kathy Sites will be letting the group use her art supplies. Colleen Magee and Katlyn Brown said they were in charge of decorating. "We are in charge of decorating the cafeteria and collecting decorations and finding volunteers to supervise," Magee said. Brown said the class will help set up and tear down the night of the event. "We asked Mr. Makley and Mrs. Riepenhoff if they would come in and supervise," she said. "The cafeteria ladies said they would donate cookies and Mr. Jay is going to be our Santa Claus." Justin Micheal, Sarika Sivagnanam and Ambika Sivagnanam said they were in charge of the food and the after party for the event. "We have to make sure there's enough food and supplies for the kids and enough for the after party," Micheal said. "We're hoping for donations from Kroger and Pantry Pride and we're making food like cookies and fudge. Sarika Sivagnanam said they are also looking for donations for supplies to decorate cookies, while Ambika Sivagnanam said they will also be providing silverware and napkins and writing thank you letters. As a class, Tobe said her students split into five groups and came up with 10 to 20 ideas that were then narrowed to three and they voted on the Christmas party. "They decided how to split up into groups and what they need," she said. "They've come up with a master task list, a resource list and they're going out of the school to talk to people in the community." The students said the event will feature either a raffle or individually wrapped gifts — depending on the amount they receive — to give away to area children. The toys and shoeboxes donated from Monday to Tuesday, Nov. 24, can be dropped off to Tobe's classroom or in the boxes at Memorial High School, McBroom School, East Elementary School and West Elementary School.
