ST. MARYS — A local school district is nearing the end of the bid
process for a new school building after opening bids on Thursday
afternoon.
St. Marys School District Treasurer Tom Sommer opened the bids for specified floor coverings for the district's new high school-middle school complex at the St. Marys City Schools District Service Center. The district received four bids for the $532,500 estimated project, Business Manager Kurt Kuffner said. T & D Interiors, of Lima, was the highest bidder with a bid of $418,361, followed by AIC Contracting of Hamilton with a bid of $349,680, Legacy Commercial Flooring of Columbus with a bid of $347,977 and Spectra Contract Flooring of Columbus with the apparent low bidder at $326,350. "We are extremely pleased with the flooring bid results," Kuffner said. "Frankly, we have been pleased with the bid results throughout the entire project." The next step in the bid process, Kuffner said, is to undertake a scope review process, which will begin sometime next week. "If the apparent low bidder passes the scope (bid) review by our construction management team and the district, the bid will have come in $206,150, under the estimate, which is great news for our community," he said. Kuffner said he did not know if they will have a recommendation for the Board of Education for the Board's consideration at Wednesday's meeting. The package that was bid on Thursday includes carpeting and resilient sheet flooring for the high school-middle school complex. "Final carpet and sheet flooring colors/patterns will be selected once the flooring contract is awarded and we know exactly what flooring manufacturer the contractor has used in submitting his bid," Kuffner said. "Obviously, different flooring manufacturers have different colors and patterns of flooring." Kuffner also complimented the district's construction management team of Gilbane Building Company. "Our team — architect, construction manager and the district — works hard in an effort to get the most bang out of the dollars our taxpayers have entrusted us with for this building project," he said. The district will go through the bidding process two more times, which Kuffner estimated will be within the next three to four months, for technology and loose furnishings for the complex.
