NEW BREMEN — Four candidates are aiming for the four open positions for a term on New Bremen Village Council that would begin Jan. 1. Denny E. Burnell, 235 N. Franklin St., Don L. Kuck, 138 St. Clair Place, Delores Stienecker, 15 Circle Drive, and Rev. Steve E. Wills, 307 N. Franklin St., are running for the four-year positions on the Nov. 3 Election Day.
Burnell, a returning councilor, said this would be his fourth term on council — he has given 12 years already.
"I enjoy council," he said. "I enjoy working for the people and most certainly to make New Bremen a fine place to live."
Burnell, a retired teacher, currently holds a position as a supervisor at Auglaize Industries.
"I've learned many things, like how a village operates," he said of his experience serving the village. "The ways of doing things, like streets, like what all it takes to putting a street in, infrastructure. I've learned how government runs and operates. With every project we have, I learn something new."
Kuck, an agent at New Bremen Insurance Agency, has also spent 12 years as a New Bremen Village Councilor."I hope to continue what the village has been doing," he said. "Obviously, we've been able to see growth and improvement."
Kuck said he has learned a lot while serving as a councilor.
"I've learned a lot about local government, and sometimes you have to be patient getting things going," he said. "We've had very few issues or circumstances that have been challenging."
Stienecker has spent eight years as a councilor — this would be her third term serving the village.
"I'm learning a lot about the town, learning a lot from different people that call me with problems they have with the town," she said. "I've learned the people of New Bremen and how the town operates. I think we do a good job."
Down the line, Stienecker said her goals going into the next term center around various projects in the village.
"I'm anxious to see the Lockkeeper's House finished," she said. "I'd just like to see more people have jobs — there's still a lot of people in town who are not employed."
Wills, who is running for the seat that will be left vacant by current New Bremen Councilor Craig Meyer, is a pastor at St. Peter's CCCC.
"I've been a part of New Bremen for 10 years," Wills said. "It's a lovely, beautiful community. It has very successful leaders in it."
Wills said he is running for the seat as a way to serve is community.
"Part of my calling is to be a servant and help where I can help," he said. "I see a good, solid team leadership in the village and work groups out in the streets and parks and I want to be a part of it."
Wills said he received an invitation to run for the vacant seat, to which he said, "When you're invited to be a part of a team, you should say yes.'"
"I hope in my tenure to continue to enhance the community and continue to make it a better community to live in," he said. "I don't approach council with any axes to grind or any burning issues."
