ST. MARYS — An organizer for an annual Thanksgiving event says it could be in jeopardy if enough volunteers do not step up.
Curt McCullough, an organizer for the Giving Thanks event, said he is looking for additional volunteers to serve on committees for the annual meal. The group is holding a meeting at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lost in the 50s Diner to discuss the future of the event. "It will be Saturday where we make the decision on whether or not to have it," McCullough said. "We are looking for anyone to lend a helping hand." Giving Thanks takes place every Thanksgiving and provides meals to those in attendance. The event, held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the American Legion, is sponsored by local businesses and is open to the public. "It's free and has nothing to do with religion or economic status — it's for everyone," McCullough said. "Families and friends come and we averaged 500 to 600 dinners a year for nine years. Meals get delivered to the fire department, police department, shut-ins and people who cannot get out." The need for additional volunteers grew as several committee members declined to participate in this year's event. McCullough said some of the committees looking for volunteers include cooking, decorating and advertising. "Jim and Pam Elking, they did it for nine years and said they wanted to spend Thanksgiving with their family," McCullough said. "A lot of the committee heads bowed out so we need to get some new people." McCullough said volunteers would meet three times before the event. Any new members also could lean on veterans for help. "The few of us who worked here for a long time will be there to help," McCullough said. "It doesn't take a lot of time, but it does take coordination." McCullough encouraged anyone interested in serving on a committee to call him at 419-778-7107.
