MINSTER — One local student is focusing on her studies as she finishes out her senior year at Minster High School. Elizabeth Shultz said she is going to continue focusing on school after she received the Commended Student Award from the National Merit Scholarship program. She was among 34,000 other students in the nation who received the award. Shultz said she didn’t expect to receive the award.
“I was surprised,” Shultz said. “I didn’t really study for it, I didn’t expect to get anything for it.”
Shultz said she just went in to take the test and didn’t anticipate anything would come of it. When she was named a commended student, it put her in the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the competition by taking the 2008 preliminary SAT /National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
“I don’t know, it’s a really awesome accomplishment,” Shultz said on being named in the top 5 percent of the group.
As Shultz prepares to head to college, she said she has looked at a few colleges but has one in mind and is looking at English, literature or writing for her major.
“I have looked at a few Ivy League schools, but I have looked at Miami and that is probably my top choice,” Shultz said. “I attend Wright State right now. I have set it up when I graduate high school I will also have my associate’s in psychology.”
Shultz said through post-secondary, she is taking general education courses such as history, English and math.
On top of post-secondary, Shultz is steadily holding her grade point average in the 3.9 range and estimated she is around fifth in her class.
Shultz said she has also taken the ACT test, earning a 29. However she said she plans to re-take the test in December.
Outside of her studies, Shultz said she enjoys playing the piano and live theater.
She has received third place in a recent duet competition for piano and in the past three years has received two superior ratings and an excellent-plus rating.
“I would love to continue piano and drama, I love the performing arts,” Shultz said.
Some of the shows she has been in include the “Wizard of Oz,” “CSI Neverland” and “Romeo, Beatrice and Toto, Too.”
